James Cook Univesrity (JCU) is creating a brighter future for life in the Tropics and beyond, through education and research that makes a difference locally and globally.  An opportunity is now available for a Research Fellow, Social and Economic Risk to work within a multi-institutional team of social scientists contributing to the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Progream (RRAP), Stakeholder and Traditional Owner Engagement Subprogram.  

  • Full-time; fixed-term to June 2025
  • Academic Level B $106,593 - $125,774 p.a. + up to 17% employer superannuation contributions, leave loading and other generous employee benefits
  • Based at either the Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus, Douglas or the Cairns Nguma-bada campus, Smithfield.

Position Overview

The Research Fellow will undertake collaborative research orientated towards understanding social and economic risks associated with reef restoration and adaptation.

 The RRAP aims to develop effective interventions to help coral reefs resist, adapt to, and recover from the impacts of climate change.

What you can bring to the role

  • PhD in social sciences and substantive research experience in the social and economic dimensions of environmental management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a strong capacity to develop effective relationships across diverse sectors including Reef Traditional Owners.
  • An ability to synthesise and analyse large amounts of quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Project management skills including planning, budgeting and financial management, monitoring progress, evaluation and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under broad guidance from senior academic staff, with the ability to work in a team as well as being self-motivated to achieve a high standard of research delivery.
  • An established academic publishing track record.
