Research Assistant - Microbiology Research

About This Opportunity 

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to join the Capon Research Group, at the UQ Institute for Molecular Bioscience. A chance to further grow your experience within microbiology and natural product research, and provide research and administrative support for multiple (microbiology) research projects.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • To assist in the isolation, cultivation, photographic characterisation, cryopreservation and analysis of bacterial and fungal isolates from a range of marine substrates.
  • To prepare and assist in the chemical characterisation of solvent extracts of bacterial and fungal isolates.
  • To contribute to the safe and efficient operations of the Capon research group equipment, infrastructure, methodologies and protocols.
  • To accurately document all laboratory and administrative activities in lab books and specialist databases.
  • To prepare regular high quality written and oral presentations, and where required support the preparation of project reports and scientific manuscripts.
  • To contribute to general laboratory support, including ordering and managing consumable inventory.
  • To provide such general office administrative support as requested and actively participate in research group meetings.

About You

  • Completion of a Bachelor of Science or an equivalent combination of relevant education/training, with practical experience in the discipline of microbiology.
  • Excellent practical skills and experience in microbiological sterile technique and in the cultivation of bacteria/fungi from environmental samples (ie soils, marine substrates), as well as serial dilution leading to pure isolates, and cryo-preservation.
  • Experience using specialist databases.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively.
  • Ability to work independently on routine procedures, and to seek advice where needed.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Well-organised, methodical and self-motivated.
