A report into emerging technologies and their potential impact on and use in teaching, learning, and creative inquiry has been released.

 

The 2011 Horizon Report is the eighth in the annual series of reports focused on emerging technology in the higher education environment.

 

Each edition of the Horizon Report introduces six emerging technologies or practices that are likely to enter mainstream use within three adoption horizons over the next five years. Key trends and challenges that will affect current practice over the same time frame add context to these discussions.

 

The areas of emerging technology cited for 2011 are:

 

Time to adoption: One Year or Less

  • Electronic Books
  • Mobiles

Time to adoption: Two to Three Years

  • Augmented Reality
  • Game-based Learning

Time to adoption: Four to Five Years

  • Gesture-based Computing
  • Learning Analytics
