The Federal Government has announced it will implement recommendations from the Review of Higher Education Regulation, intended to reduce the ‘red tape’ of regulation and reporting.

Minister for Education Christopher Pyne says it will appease the concerns of some Universities.

“I have today directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA) to simplify the paperwork and deregulate,” Mr Pyne said.

“This includes improving how TEQSA consults with universities and more broadly across the sector.”

“I know universities have raised concerns about the level of regulatory burden they face... the findings of the review confirm my opinion that deregulation can happen across the sector without compromising quality standards.”

Key aspects of the moves to deregulate higher education include; amendments the TEQSA Act to cut processes, establishing a council to advise the Minister, amending legislation to reduce duplication, ensuring that through legislation the changes can start immediately.
