PM's dole data checked
The Prime Minister has been accused of mistruth about dole payments.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has claimed that “99 per cent” of people on the dole secure $130 a fortnight on average in extra payments.
But subsequent reporting has found that Department of Social Services figures show 51 per cent of Newstart recipients receive just $14 a fortnight extra on average, and no rent assistance.
Australian National University Associate Professor Ben Phillips says the average in supplement payments is $146.30 a fortnight, but the median is $8.80.
“There’s a small number of people on Newstart with kids getting family tax benefits and that’s blowing out the average,” Professor Phillips told reporters.
The only supplement actually enjoyed by “99 per cent” of Newstart recipients is an energy supplement worth 65 cents a day.
Newstart pays $555 a fortnight, supplemented by an $8.80-a-fortnight energy supplement and a maximum rent assistance payment of $137.20 a fortnight ($91.47 a fortnight if living in a share house).
