One of the world's leading thinkers in online learning, Professor Gilly Salmon, has been appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor of Learning Transformations at Swinburne University of Technology.

 

Professor Salmon is internationally renowned for her significant contributions to online education, including research, innovation, program design, teaching methods and the use of new technologies. 

 

Swinburne’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Shirley Leitch said the appointment was a major coup for the university and supports its focus on delivering high quality online education.  

 

“Professor Salmon’s expertise in online teaching and learning will be invaluable to us in meeting the educational needs of tomorrow’s students and working Australians,” Professor Leitch said.  

 

“Professor Salmon’s innovative approach for developing high quality, engaging and interactive online education is already informing Swinburne Online program design and delivery.” 

 

Professor Salmon said the online environment presents fantastic opportunities for future learning, teaching, creative expression and knowledge contribution. 

 

“I believe Swinburne’s passion for transformative learning matches my own and I am delighted to be joining the university at this critical moment in its online education journey,” Professor Salmon said.

 

“My focus will be on continuous and rapid innovations, building on the successes of the past and continuing to develop Swinburne’s preferred and viable futures for knowledge and learning.” 

 

Prior to joining Swinburne, Professor Salmon was the Executive Director and Professor (Learning Futures) at the Australian Digital Futures Institute at the University of Southern Queensland. 

 

She was previously the Professor of E-learning and Learning Technologies, and Head of the Beyond Distance Research Alliance and the Media Zoo, at the University of Leicester in the UK.

 

Professor Salmon will take up her appointment at Swinburne in January 2012.
