Federal Government announces $30 million for educational equality

The Federal Government has announced a $30 million cash injection to improve literacy and numeracy results of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in over 100 schools across the country.

School Education Minister Peter Garrett said the Next Steps program will be managed by the Stronger Smarter Institute at the Queensland University of Technology, and around 7800 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are expected to benefit.

The Federal Government announced that individual schools will receive between $210,000 and $625,000 depending on student numbers and remoteness.

The Education Action Plan, agreed by COAG in May this year, nominated 900 ‘Focus Schools’ across Australia with the highest numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, 600 of which are already receiving funding from the government.

The announcement by the Federal Government will see a further 100 of those 900 schools receive assistance.
